Why are young activists in Thailand protesting against the monarchy? – BBC Newsnight

A student-led protest movement in Thailand is demanding reform of the monarchy — in a country where it’s illegal to defame, insult, or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent or regent. Please subscribe HERE

Thailand’s lèse-majesté law, which forbids any insult to the monarchy, is among the strictest in the world.

Over the past five months a student-led protest movement has started demanding reform of the monarchy and an end to military coups, of which Thailand has had twenty in modern times.

The demonstrations sent shockwaves through a country which is taught from birth to revere and love the monarchy and fear the consequences of talking about it.

BBC South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports for Newsnight.

  1. When will you show protests against your monarchy which is sucking upto the tax payers’ money?

  2. Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
    And the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord
They will walk behind the plough-share
They will put away the sword
    The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
    Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
    When tomorrow comes!

  6. all governments wont listen and use the paid thugs to silence the 99%.50 years ago no problems today they continue to lose the argument.People understand we needs structure and systems but when they are corrupt and change l our inalienable rights what does one expect. You cant change the laws to suit your agendas

  7. That has not said anything because he says like anyone can’t touch what he loves. In some conversation example in this conversation
“I believe that if English people used such words against Queen Elizabeth they would have been jailed a long time” he believes the UK can’t say anything, that’s a step back to stone age thinking, everything in this world has changed, old man you have to watched and learn before you answer or say something to someone.

  8. The King is not a tyrant, he helps people, a lot in rural areas. Does anyone has proofs otherwise? The protest looked too violent. Did they have some other hidden agendas? Thailand’s progresses were hampered by corruptions.
