Military In Politics: Indonesia | Insight | Full Episode

It played a pivotal role during the war of independence against the Dutch colonial rule. The Indonesian military continued to stamp its ascendency in Indonesia’s political and economic spheres during 32 years of Suharto’s presidency.

The role of the Indonesian military in politics however came to an end after the fall of former President Suharto in May 1998 in the midst of a severe economic crisis as public protests grew over rampant corruption, cronyism and nepotism within the government and the Suharto family.

Today, the Indonesian military exists as a professional fighting force which remains subservient to the civilian leadership. How is Indonesia able to thrive as the world’s third largest democracy when several others fail?

  1. indonesian history kinda like history of Myanmar rightnow😢i hope situations in myanmar will be better soon

  2. Its because President in Indonesia is the highest commander for military army. Thats mean the highest power on military is come from civil people as President through democracy process. So military army put the highest power of the nation on civil people. The people as mother for military army that to be served and protected. The military army for handle war , and the police institition for manage civil people. To balance the power of President, there are another power like People Representative Council , etc. And President just can be chossen Twice in Row to lead the Country. And there are several political party on Indonesia. Indonesia also has strong democracy ideologi , Pancasila (Five Precept), and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). And the most important the military army must hold neutral positition (out of politics). Indonesia also has unique NSS (Neighbourhood Safety System’ on each Neighbourhood) called Hansip or Civil Defence, it is active protection system’ to prevent crime on the field and help the victim, before the criminal suspect arrest by police.

  3. A little disappointed the documentary doesn’t seem to detail US and CIA involvement in assisting with the rise of Suharto and the communist purge of 65.

  4. My grandfather and my uncle in Malang, presumed kidnaped by the anti comunist movement, just because they never went to mosque ( they were Catholic) and probably got to Bali and killed, said my mom

  5. I wish everyone safe and sound in this pandemic’s time.
    It’s been more than a year with covid and travel restriction everywhere and I need a holiday already!

  6. IMHO, Indonesian is very lucky to have Joko Widodo as president. Blessed him…

  7. Indonesia has a perfect transition, I think the future of indonesia would be very promising, it can achieve the level of malaysia at least to my view. but I hope you can treat the indonesian chinese better, the thing happened in 1998 are remembered by most of people in China, it has huge (negative) impact on our impression on Indonesia.

  8. we can achieve this step with military became closer to the people and they act fairly without pushing their own agenda to the civilian goverment.after all we realize that we should united if we want to succeed

  9. I will not say we Indonesian successful make democracy as there still many individual/group have radical mindset, but we will keep trying.

  10. Many Indonesian speakers in this video use abbrevation which are aliens for foreigners
    Such as :
    MPR = House of Representatives
    PKI = Indonesian Communist Party
    KKN = Coruption, Collution and Nepotism

  11. Military still want to control the government, it will become Myanmar if military use coup

  12. what song is he played in piano at 31:52? , i remember heard that before but forgot the name

  13. BJ Habibie is the best president imho. He was engineer and never attempted to seek power. He’s smart and wise during the transition period from New Order to democratic. He succeded to prevent coup and lowered inflation. May his soul rest in peace.
