Explaining the Dutch Education System

Sorry for the long wait. Been pretty busy with my internship lately. Initially this video was gonna be about 15 to 20 minutes in length, however I scrapped the second half due to not wanting to delay this video any longer. The second half would feature my personal experience + stories regarding the dutch education system. This part will most likely be reworked in future videos.

I’m aware this video is a little different from the usual story time videos, and therefore thus has a more serious type of tone to it, but I hope you all like it non the less.

  1. Hello, Yuunarii, thank you for this informative video! It has helped me understand what to expect when we move to The Hague this summer. Very well explained! PS: the bunnies are so cute!

  2. One of my favorite parts of living in the Netherlands, was that we lived in front of a college, so every morning, groups of 20-40 teens on their bikes would flood the surrounding streets. I mean, the bike parking had like 200 spots.

  3. Discrimination among Dutch is shameful. You feel discrimination in every level of life in Holland. Even in the education system.

  4. Random question that was bothering me. How in netherland you can be 19 and still not enter higshchool. Is there any rules or how does it work? And can you go to higshchool after 18?

  5. What I like about secondary Dutch education is that there’s less stigma around students wanting to focus on more practical/vocational fields. In England you have two different types of exams, but they’re just the same subjects of two different difficulties. Then you can go to sixth form (the route to university) or college (more vocational training), and people tend to look down upon people who choose the college route. But some universities have a foundation year which gives a route to go to a bachelor’s with less secondary qualifications.
    Edit: I forgot to mention that we also have vocational diplomas in secondary school called BTEC

  6. I’m South African and speak Afrikaans and it’s cool to see how our language differs from yours! For instance, you call sciences “Wetenschap” where we call it “Wetenskap”, you spell education as “Onderwijs” where we spell it “Onderwys”

    Edit: Thought I should clarify that Afrikaans is basically a simplified version of Dutch, mixed in with a lot of English and a bit of Indonesian :>

  7. Wow, not only great education system but the netherlands is also very progressive when it comes to trans legislation (at least according to wikipedia [?]) I wish I was born there ;;;
