Activism 2.0 – Rebirth of the Environmental Movement: Emily Hunter at TEDxUTSC

A graduate from the UTSC journalism program, Emily Hunter has graced the world stage with her empowering and innovative work as an environmental advocacy journalist, who is constantly reporting throughout the climax of global activist movements. The daughter of Robert Hunter, first president and co-founder of Greenpeace, Emily has had a rich career in protecting our earth and combating climate change and animal abuse.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. Great speach! Congrats! You don’t have to do the same things your parents did to be just as good as them! Keep up the good job!

  2. yay save a whale to sacrifice the life of a poor family in the north that actually needs the whale oil to survive..

  3. I like your perspective on ways we can help. It is a positive and more hopeful way of looking at each individuals impact on the world. I am not the younger generation you talked about, but I can still make a difference. Keep working for change!

  4. Very well done. Inspiring to do your part and remain hopeful. Sharing your struggles is brave and the type of honesty people really benefit from.

  5. With the technology we have right now, whale oil is seriously outdated. If any poor country is still using whale oil, it is because of the outdated socioeconomic and political model they have. And THAT is what we need to change.

  7. I hope this woman doesn’t support the meat and dairy industries. It would be highly hypocritical if she did.

  8. Thank you Emily Hunter.    Activism for Animal Rights also needs to be embraced and Sea Shepherd is doing this for sea mammals.     I live in a city where young activists for veganism and Animal Rights are growing in numbers each year thanks to Sea Shepherd and other organizations.     It’s amazing to watch this happening!    You are following in your Dad’s foot steps by speaking about these issues at this critical time.

  9. Great speech, I think you made the right decision about making public speaking a part of your career. I really liked these points that you made: “We can be our own changemakers” and “We are not hopeless. Our planet is not hopeless” and finally, the fact that there is much much more fossil fuel in the ground than is sufficient to cause climate change. I think that the future of environmental activism needs to include education about how to live sustainably. Whether it’s with the internet or with face-to-face interaction, telling the public about what is going on with the planet and with environmental issues has to be part of Activism 2.0.

  10. If you’re worried about the environment then you NEED to check out Cowspircy on Netflix and Seaspircy on Youtube.

  11. I just want there to be world peace already. This world would be so dope if it was at peace
